Our teaching toolkit
At Harrogate High School, we believe in maintaining a structured and engaging learning environment. Our teaching approach is based on clear routines, focused lesson phases, and an emphasis on student engagement and responsibility. Below is a breakdown of our lesson structure and classroom expectations.
Lesson Phases
Each lesson at Harrogate High School follows a set structure, ensuring consistency and clarity for students. These phases include:
-
Learning Purpose
This phase contextualizes the learning within the 'big picture' and outlines the expectations for the lesson. It provides students with a clear understanding of what they are meant to achieve. -
Expert Input
The teacher imparts knowledge through instruction, discussions, and feedback. This phase often includes modeling or demonstrating concepts, as well as student-teacher collaboration. -
Independent Practice
Students apply the knowledge or practice the skills they’ve learned in the previous phases. During this phase, teachers circulate to check for understanding and address any misconceptions. Live marking is an essential part of this phase. -
Knowledge Recall
This phase provides students an opportunity to recall and retain information from previous lessons. It serves as an assessment tool to gauge students' memory and understanding. -
Learning Review
At the end of the lesson, we revisit the Learning Purpose and Key Questions. This review helps inform future lessons and planning. Whiteboards, exit tickets, and application questions are often used to facilitate this review.
Classroom Routines
To maintain a calm and structured learning environment, we have clear classroom routines that both teachers and students follow:
-
Entry Routine
A structured sequence of actions to begin the lesson calmly, including a warm greeting as students enter and knowledge recall questions to start the lesson in silence. -
3-2-1
A simple routine to signal the need for silence and focus during transitions. -
No Opt Out
This phrase reminds students to contribute fully to their learning and ensure everyone engages with the lesson. -
Transitions
Teachers will clearly explain what is required as students move from one phase to the next. -
Exit Routine
A clear sequence to end the lesson calmly and ensure a smooth transition for the next class.
