Harrogate High School OFSTED Report February 2026
Inspectors described Harrogate High School as a place where “care, compassion and commitment are characteristic of pupils’ experience” and recognised the significant improvements that have been made across the school in recent years. We are incredibly proud of the transformation of our school. We are pleased to celebrate the hard work of staff and students that impressed the inspection team so thoroughly.
This inspection was carried out under Ofsted’s new inspection framework, which no longer gives schools a single overall judgement (such as Outstanding or Good). Instead, inspectors assess schools across a range of key areas. For five of these areas, Harrogate High School was judged to be meeting the “expected standard”, which demonstrates significant and sustained improvement from our previous ‘Require Improvement’ judgement. We hope you will enjoy reading through the report in its entirety, but we have drawn out a few snippets here:
|
Behaviour and attitudes |
pupils behave well |
|
Curriculum and teaching |
teaching has improved significantly since the last inspection |
|
Inclusion |
leaders have fostered an inclusive culture that threads through all areas of the school |
|
Leadership and governance |
leaders have created a positive school culture underpinned by clear values and expectations |
|
Personal development and wellbeing |
pupils benefit from a wide range of opportunities to develop their talents and interests |
Furthermore, we meet the Safeguarding standards: The school has an open and positive culture of safeguarding. All legal requirements are met. As a result, pupils are made safer and feel safe.
What does “expected standard” really mean?
- Teaching is strong and has improved significantly
- Leaders are effective, ambitious and acting in pupils’ best interests
- Behaviour is calm, orderly and consistent
- The school is inclusive, supportive and values every child
- Safeguarding arrangements are effective and pupils feel safe
Inspectors have recognised the improvement of our school:
- Leaders have successfully created a positive, inclusive school culture built on shared values and high expectations
- Staff feel well supported and value the training and professional development they receive
- Pupils behave well, enjoy learning and show positive attitudes in lessons
- Ambition is high across subjects, with a broad and balanced curriculum in place for all pupils
- Disadvantaged pupils’ outcomes have improved considerably, with gaps continuing to close
Achieving expected standards represents a major gain for us, confirming that the improvements made are real, embedded and recognised nationally.
The report clearly identifies our next steps, particularly around continuing to strengthen outcomes at the end of Key Stage 4. Inspectors acknowledged that the actions already taken in Achievement, are having a positive impact, with attainment improving and more pupils building strong foundations for future success.
We are proud that inspectors recognised Harrogate High as a school where pupils are known well, supported effectively and welcomed into a caring community. This outcome is a testament to the hard work of our pupils, the commitment of our staff, and the support of parents and carers.
