Curriculum Intent

At Harrogate High School, the Technology curriculum empowers students to become creative, resilient and responsible learners who can confidently apply practical skills and theoretical knowledge to real-world contexts. Through the study of Textiles, Food and Workshop (Design and Make), students develop a strong understanding of how design, materials, tools and processes shape the world around them.

Our intent is to provide a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum that equips all students with essential life skills alongside a solid foundation for further study and future careers in creative, technical and vocational pathways. We aim to inspire curiosity, innovation and problem-solving by encouraging students to design, make and evaluate products that meet genuine needs, considering functionality, aesthetics, sustainability and user requirements.

Links to CARES values

Courage

  • Technology lessons encourage students to try new design ideas and practical skills, often involving trial and error.

Aspiration

  • Technology inspires students to set ambitious goals, such as creating innovative products or mastering new techniques.

Respect

  • Students learn to respect safety procedures when using equipment and materials.

Equality

  • Technology provides an inclusive learning environment where all students can participate, regardless of skill level or background.

Self-Control

  • Working with tools and machinery requires careful attention, patience, and discipline to maintain safety and quality.

Links to British Values

Students often work in teams where they vote on design ideas, share roles, and make group decisions. Students learn about health and safety regulations, product standards, and environmental laws that govern design and manufacturing. They explore how technology can empower individuals, such as assistive devices for people with disabilities or sustainable solutions for communities. They learn to appreciate different design perspectives and how diverse contributions lead to better outcomes. Students explore how design can be inclusive of different cultures and beliefs, such as designing products for diverse users or considering religious customs in food technology.
