Curriculum Intent

Harrogate High School's Personal, Social, Health, Citizenship, and Economic Education (PSHCE) curriculum is designed to equip students with the knowledge, understanding, attitudes, and practical skills necessary to lead safe, healthy, and productive lives. This curriculum is a statutory requirement encompassing Relationships and Health Education, as well as the National Curriculum for Citizenship. Additionally, it addresses emerging safeguarding and wellbeing needs, ensuring that students are well-informed and prepared for various life situations

Links to CARES values

1. Courage

  • PSHCE helps students build resilience by encouraging them to face challenges, speak up against bullying or injustice, and make positive choices even when it’s difficult.

  • It fosters emotional bravery — like asking for help when needed or standing up for themselves and others.

2. Aspiration

  • PSHCE motivates students to set personal goals and understand pathways to success, whether academic, career, or personal growth.

  • It encourages a growth mindset and ambition, helping students visualize and plan for their futures.

3. Respect

  • Central to PSHCE is teaching respect for oneself and others, including understanding differences and practicing empathy.

  • Lessons on relationships, diversity, and community living build mutual respect and social harmony.

4. Equality

  • PSHCE covers topics like human rights, discrimination, and social justice.

  • It raises awareness about equality issues, promoting inclusion and challenging stereotypes and prejudice.

5. Self-Control

  • PSHCE helps students develop emotional regulation and decision-making skills.

  • It supports understanding consequences, managing impulses, and maintaining healthy habits — all key parts of self-discipline.

At Harrogate High, these values are often explicitly woven into the curriculum through the CARES Character Curriculum, which runs alongside PSHCE and helps reinforce these qualities consistently.
