Curriculum Intent

At Harrogate High School, our Health and Social Care curriculum is designed to inspire students to understand the importance of care, compassion and respect in supporting the needs of others. Rooted in our school ethos of Learning First, the curriculum equips students with the knowledge, skills, and values required to make a positive difference in health, social and childcare settings, as well as in their wider communities.

Links to CARES values

  • Courage – Students are encouraged to step outside their comfort zones by exploring sensitive topics such as health inequalities, diversity, and ethical dilemmas in care. They learn to discuss challenging issues with maturity and empathy, developing the confidence to act as advocates for others.

  • Aspiration – The course nurtures ambition by exposing learners to a wide range of career pathways in health, social care and early years sectors. Students are inspired to pursue further study and training, striving for excellence in their academic and personal development.

  • Respect – Central to the study of Health and Social Care is understanding and applying the care values, which promote dignity, privacy, and respect for individuals’ beliefs, cultures, and choices. Learners develop respectful attitudes that prepare them for professional and community life.

  • Equality – The curriculum ensures that students understand the importance of inclusion, fairness and anti-discriminatory practice. Through case studies and practical application, they learn how to promote equality of opportunity and challenge prejudice in health and social care settings.

  • Self-Control – Students develop self-discipline and emotional regulation through reflective practice, managing deadlines, and working collaboratively. They learn to demonstrate professionalism, resilience, and empathy – essential traits for anyone working in a caring profession.

Links to British Values

The study of Health and Social Care at Level 2 actively promotes British Values by helping students understand how these principles underpin effective practice within health, social care and early years settings. Learners explore democracy through discussions about decision-making in care environments and the importance of giving individuals a voice in their own care. They develop an appreciation of the rule of law by examining legislation such as the Health and Safety at Work Act and the Equality Act, recognising how laws protect individuals and maintain standards of care. Individual liberty is reinforced as students learn about supporting people’s rights to make choices and maintain independence. Through the consistent application of mutual respect and tolerance, students understand how to value diversity, challenge discrimination, and promote inclusive practice—ensuring that all individuals, regardless of background or belief, are treated with dignity and compassion.
